Assistant Coach Gerry Abas

Gerry Abas joins CSUB after becoming one of the top wrestlers in Fresno State history and continuing on in the Fresno State program for 10 years. Abas marked his name as one of the all-time greats in California wrestling history when he became the first four time All-American in California - accomplishing the feat from 1992-95.

His 134 career wins put him at #2 on Fresno State’s all-time win list; Second, only to his younger brother, Stephen. Gerry was a three-time NCAA Finalist and finished sixth as a freshman. Only eight Bulldogs had ever had more wins then the 41 Abas had in his freshman season. In 1995, was voted Bulldog Athletics Athlete of the Year.

As assistant under Clovis legend Dennis DeLiddo, Abas had coached 12 NCAA Division I All-Americans, including Stephen Abas, who won three NCAA Titles and an Olympic silver medal at the 2004 Games in Athens.

In 2006, Abas helped established a wrestling club at Fresno Pacific University. In that same year, he was inducted into the California Wrestling Hall of Fame.

He wrestled at Oakland Tech High School in Oakland, California. While in high school; Abas finished second and third at the CIF State Championships, during his junior and senior years; respectively. He remains the last state placer from the Oakland Section - which he accomplished in 1990.

In 1990, Abas was the Junior National Freestyle Champion at l32lbs and Espoir National Freestyle Champion at 62kg.

Abas comes from a family of four brothers that wrestle. His older brother, Greg Gascon, was a Div. I All-American at the Univ. of New Mexico in 1988. His younger brothers, Norman and Stephen, were both High School State Champions together in 1994 at the 103 and 1 l2lb weight classes. The brothers have a total of nine NCAA Division I All-American honors.

In 1999, he received his bachelor’s degree in Criminology.

Abas and his wife of ten years, Virginia, have a son Jaden, 8, and a daughter Alyssa, 4
