PRIMM, Nev. -- Just as the Cal State Bakersfield wrestling
team seemed to catch fire at the end of Friday's first
day of competition at the 25th annual Las Vegas Invitational,
the Roadrunners went ice cold on Saturday morning at
the Star of the Desert Arena inside Buffalo Bill's Hotel
and Casino.
Bakersfield's trio of Matt Schumm, Brandon Doyle and
Daniel Atondo all dropped their first matches of the
day on Saturday, leaving all three one win away from
placing at the prestigious 51-team tournament. It marks
the second straight year that the Roadrunners don't
have a placewinner and just the fourth in the 25-year
history of the event.
Schumm was the closest to winning Saturday. At 141
pounds, Schumm wrestled No. 12 seed Kyle Rushell of
Wisconsin, but the Bakersfield senior fell just short,
dropping a 5-2 decision.
That set up Doyle at 149 pounds, who was coming off
of an impressive final two matches on Friday. But No.
10 seed Lance Palmer of Ohio State controlled this match
from beginning to end, and after leading 8-2 in the
second period, Palmer pinned over Doyle in 3:57.
At 165, Atondo did not have to wrestle a seeded opponent,
but maybe Zach Lee of Western State should have been.
Lee reached the quarterfinals, only losing to No. 4
seed Max Dean of Indiana 4-1 in that match.
Just like in Doyle's match, Lee controlled the match
from beginning to end before eventually earning a 15-2
major decision over Atondo. The Roadrunners wrestle
their first dual match of the season Dec. 14 when they
travel to take on Pac-10 rival Boise State at 7 p.m
