Cal Poly SLO wins wrestling dual

Friday, January 26th, 2007 Bakersfield Californian news article

SAN LUIS OBISPO -- Cal State Bakersfield dropped another close dual Friday night with a 25-15 loss at Cal Poly in a matchup that was closer than the score indicated.

Daniel Atondo got things off to a good start for the Roadrunners with technical fall over Evan Barbre at 165 pounds to avenge the junior's two losses last Sunday.

Bakersfield jumped out to an 8-0 lead when Garth Wara beat Ernie Varela at 174 by a 7-2 decision.

Cal Poly won the next three matches for a 15-8 advantage.

First Yuri Kalika defeated Brandon Ceremello 11-5 at 184 to narrow the score to 8-2. Cal Poly took a 9-8 advantage when Matt Monteiro pinned Brandon Halsey in the first period. Another first-period pin from Cody Parker on Eric Parker made the score 15-8 midway through the dual.

Cal Poly won three of the final five matches to seal the win. Brandon Zoetewey won at 125 over Josh Obregon by a 9-0 major decision to narrow the team score 15-12 Cal Poly, but the 'Runners didn't get any closer.

The Roadrunners return home at 7 p.m. today to face UC Davis at the Icardo Center.
